(Leiden 1657–1715 Brussels) sleeping dog before a still life with poultry and vegetables against a rustic backdrop, signed centre right: A Gryef, oil on canvas, 42 x 57 cm, in an original gilded and carved frame ‘à la Berain’,
De Gryeff, who even in his lifetime was one of the most successful and sought-after still life painters at the European courts, employed the motif of the sleeping dog in several of his works, such as in the picture in the former collection of the Duchess of Somerset, Petworth House/Sussex. A very similar composition by Gryeff was sold at the Dorotheum on 2 Dec 1969 as lot 48.
